Welcome to Intersex Greece
Intersex is an umbrella term for innate natural differences in sex traits or reproductive anatomy and the lived experience of the socio-cultural consequences of being born with a body that does not fit within the normative definitions of “male” and “female” bodies.
Though we haven’t been taught that at school, sometimes people are born with such differences or develop them at a young age. Genitalia, hormones, internal anatomy, or chromosomes can develop in many ways.
Intersex children’s healthy bodies are often pathologised and secretly surgically altered, in their absence, because of social norms, ignorance, shame and stigma. This includes surgeries to create a vagina, reduce a clitoris, move a urethra, or remove testes. Most surgeries happen before the age of two. Intersex activists, the UN and many of the world’s top human rights organizations agree that cosmetic surgeries altering sex characteristics must be exclusively the individual’s informed choice. Such medical interventions, plus selective terminations of intersex fetuses, are legally and largely performed in most countries of the world, including Greece.
Intersex Greece is a community of intersex people, their supportive families and advocates that live in Greece. We are fighting for the human rights of children born with variation of sex characteristics towards restoring intersex bodies and lives, to bodies and lives that matter.
